Every year, the distinctive Student Athlete Scholars (SAS) society upholds a proud tradition of honoring outstanding student-athletes who exemplify the pinnacle of excellence in both sports and academia. As the graduating class of 2025 approaches their final chapter at SAS, we are delighted to put a special spotlight on an individual who stands as testament to what SAS strives to nurture – Michael “Mikey” Lewis.
Born in Richmond, TX, Mikey was nurtured from a young age by his parents Michael R. Lewis, Sr., and Iris Lewis. The environment remarkably fostered his natural inclination for community service, leadership, and, notably, baseball. Today, Mikey’s tenacity and dedication to the sport have earned his well-deserved spot at Dillard University in New Orleans.
But there’s far more to Mikey than just his undeniable prowess on the baseball field. Mikey’s commitment to serving his community is commendable. He has given back to his community extensively by volunteering at various programs and community centers, further demonstrating the SAS ethos of a scholar-athlete.
One of Mikey’s most exceptional attributes is his dedication to mentorship. Recognizing the transformative power of guidance, he provides mentorship to young, differently-abled youth, playing a crucial role as a baseball instructor.
Mikey’s leadership isn’t just limited to the baseball field or his community service efforts. He is an active member of Kappa League, Top Teens of America, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and Youth in Philanthropy. These affiliations, coupled with his athletic and academic achievements, exemplify the multi-faceted individual that SAS aims to develop.
The journey of a scholar-athlete is no easy feat. The ability to balance sporting commitments with academic rigor demands grit, perseverance and resilience – attributes that Mikey holds in abundance. To eliminate the chance of burnout, he learned to master the balance between grades, sports, and application processes by taking a page from SAS’s tailored strategies designed explicitly for athlete-scholars.
In the spirit of SAS’s aim to facilitate mutual growth amongst their network of trailblazers, Mikey is encouraged to share the invaluable wisdom he’s garnered throughout his journey to help future scholar-athletes who follow in his footsteps.
Mikey’s journey is proof that being a high-achiever is worth the recognition it deserves. His accomplishments resonate with the core values that SAS stand for – merit-based achievement, leadership, mentorship, community service, and a commitment to excel both in the sports field and academically.
With the blend of outstanding athletes and strong academic minds in SAS, we eagerly look forward to seeing Mikey and his peers inspire future generations of student-athletes. After all, as we always say at SAS, “You’re a high-achiever, admissions should recognize.”
