In Oakdale, Connecticut, Evan Lopez has built a reputation defined by discipline, resilience, and leadership. A graduating high school senior at Saint Bernard School, Lopez has distinguished himself as a multi-sport athlete, an academic achiever, and a respected team leader. His recent accomplishments—including earning ECC Champion honors, First Team All-Star recognition, and serving as Team Captain—mark the culmination of four impactful years as a varsity soccer player. As he prepares to continue both his academic and athletic career at Westminster College in the Honors Program studying Biochemistry, Lopez stands as a powerful example of what it means to excel as a complete student-athlete.
Lopez is also a proud member of Student Athlete Scholars, an invitation-only community that recognizes high-achieving student-athletes who excel not only in competition, but in the classroom and in their character. The organization exists to support driven students whose athletic dedication is matched by academic success, leadership, and service. Through mentorship, scholarship access, and college guidance, Student Athlete Scholars helps young leaders translate their work ethic into meaningful opportunities. Lopez’s inclusion in this respected network reflects the balance he has consistently maintained between his performance on the field and his commitment to personal growth beyond it.
A Four-Year Varsity Presence and Championship Leader
At Saint Bernard School, Lopez has been a cornerstone of the varsity soccer program. A four-year varsity player in Division II, he has contributed in critical roles as both a Center Defensive Midfielder and Centerback. His versatility, field vision, and tactical discipline allowed him to anchor the defensive structure while also initiating attacking sequences from deep positions.
Over his high school career, Saint Bernard reached the ECC Final twice, capturing the ECC Championship in 2025. That championship season stands as a defining chapter not only in Lopez’s career but also in school history. The team’s success extended into the State Quarterfinals, underscoring the competitive standard they established.
In recognition of his impact, Lopez earned First Team All-Star honors and was named an Exact All American. He also received the Saints Award, further acknowledging his leadership and contributions to the program. For the 2025–2026 season, he was selected as Team Captain—a role that speaks to the respect he commands among teammates and coaches alike.
Leadership for Lopez has never been symbolic. As captain, he set the tone during training sessions, demanded accountability, and ensured that younger players understood the standards required to compete at a championship level. His presence in the defensive midfield required constant communication, organization, and anticipation—qualities that translated seamlessly into team leadership.
Club Success and International Experience
Beyond his high school accomplishments, Lopez has competed at a high level in club soccer. Since 2024, he has played with CT Rush South Central, participating on the EDP National Team. In this setting, he expanded his role to include Center Attacking Midfielder in addition to Centerback, demonstrating his adaptability and technical range. Serving as Team Captain, he earned multiple Player of the Week honors, reinforcing his consistency and influence on the field.
Prior to CT Rush South Central, Lopez competed with Mendocca Soccer Club from 2021 to 2024, again playing as a Center Defensive Midfielder and Centerback. His performance earned multiple Player of the Week recognitions, reflecting his sustained excellence across seasons.
One of the most unique highlights of his club career came in 2024, when he served as Team Captain at the Rey Cup in Iceland. Competing internationally broadened his perspective on the global nature of the sport and reinforced the universal language of teamwork and discipline. From local recreation leagues in Montville to international competition overseas, Lopez’s journey illustrates both progression and perseverance.
A Multi-Sport Competitor
While soccer has been central to his life, Lopez’s athletic resume extends beyond a single field. At Saint Bernard, he has also competed in varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse.
In basketball, he played during the 2022–2023 and 2025–2026 seasons in Division I competition. As a freshman, he earned a starting role on the freshman team before later contributing as a varsity senior player. Basketball sharpened his spatial awareness, footwork, and conditioning—skills that complemented his soccer performance.
In 2025–2026, Lopez added another challenge by joining the Saint Bernard Varsity Lacrosse team as a midfielder. In his first year as a varsity lacrosse player, he embraced the learning curve with the same determination that has defined his athletic career. The transition underscores his willingness to step outside his comfort zone and compete wherever opportunity calls.
Balancing three sports while maintaining academic excellence requires time management, mental toughness, and unwavering focus. Lopez has demonstrated all three.
What Soccer Means to Him
For Lopez, soccer is more than competition—it is transformation.
“Football, or soccer as they call it here in America, a game in which whoever kicks a ball into their opponent’s goal wins. Sounds pretty simple, maybe a bit boring but yet that truly isn’t what the game truly is,” he reflects. “This game can be someone’s life, someone’s excitement, someone’s reason to live, someone’s escape.”
In his own words, soccer has been nearly everything. It has been a constant presence through life’s changes. “People and things would always come and go but soccer was always there for me,” he shares. The sport witnessed his personal evolution—from weighing 200 pounds to 150 pounds, from struggling with confidence to rediscovering it fully.
“There would be no weight loss journey without soccer, no friends without soccer, no confidence without soccer, and even to the extent of no life without soccer,” Lopez explains. “Soccer is the greatest teacher I could ever ask for.”
From playing in Montville Recreation leagues to winning Saint Bernard’s first championship and competing in Iceland, the sport has shaped his identity. It has taught resilience after defeat, humility in victory, and persistence through adversity. It has provided structure, belonging, and purpose.
Academic Excellence and Future Plans
Lopez’s accomplishments extend beyond athletics. As a graduating senior, he has earned admission into the Westminster College Honors Program, where he will study Biochemistry. His acceptance into an honors-level academic track highlights the same intellectual discipline that he applies on the field.
His membership in Student Athlete Scholars further recognizes this balance. The community exists to honor student-athletes who combine athletic achievement with academic strength, leadership, and character. Members gain access to scholarship opportunities, mentorship, and college admissions insight—resources designed to help them step confidently into their next chapter.
For Lopez, this recognition aligns naturally with his values. He has consistently demonstrated that excellence is not confined to a scoreboard. It is found in classrooms, in leadership roles, in service to teammates, and in personal growth.
At Westminster College, he is committed to continuing his soccer career while pursuing his degree in Biochemistry. The combination reflects both passion and ambition—an athlete determined to compete at the next level while preparing for a rigorous scientific future.
A Legacy of Growth and Leadership
Looking back on his high school years, Lopez leaves behind a legacy defined by commitment. Four years on varsity. An ECC Championship. Two ECC Finals appearances. State Quarterfinal competition. First Team All-Star honors. Exact All American recognition. Team Captaincy. The Saints Award.
Yet statistics and titles only tell part of the story.
His true legacy lies in transformation—the physical, mental, and emotional growth he experienced through sport. It lies in the teammates he inspired, the younger players who watched him train, and the culture of accountability he helped build at Saint Bernard.
As a Student Athlete Scholar, a champion, and a graduating senior, Evan Lopez represents what is possible when discipline meets opportunity. From Oakdale, Connecticut, to international fields and now to Westminster College, his journey reflects the power of sport to shape character and open doors.
And as he steps into the next chapter of his life—college student, biochemistry scholar, and collegiate soccer player—one thing remains constant:
Soccer is still there.
Still guiding. Still teaching. Still shaping the leader he continues to become.
