How to Stand Out on College Applications

As a high school student-athlete, you have a unique advantage when it comes to college applications. Your involvement in sports not only shows your dedication but also your ability to balance multiple responsibilities. However, with so many other student-athletes applying to colleges, it’s important to make sure that you stand out. Here are some tips on how to do just that:

  1. Start early: Don’t wait until your senior year to start thinking about your college applications. Start researching colleges and their athletic programs as early as possible. Find out the admissions requirements and ensure you are on track to meet them. Also, make sure you’re a good fit both academically and athletically, and reach out to coaches to express your interest and ask any questions you may have.

  2. Focus on academics: While your athletic abilities are important, colleges are also looking for well-rounded individuals who excel in the classroom. Make sure your grades are up to par and that you are taking challenging courses when possible.

  3. Be proactive: Don’t wait for coaches to come to you. Reach out to coaches at the schools you are interested in and let them know you are interested in their program. Send them your athletic resume and highlight videos. Attend college athletic camps and showcases to get noticed. Look for opportunities that align with your interests and abilities, and be sure to follow up with coaches after the event.

  4. Show leadership: Colleges are looking for athletes who are not only talented but also leaders on and off the field. Show that you are a team player and have leadership qualities. Be sure to highlight your strengths and emphasize how your skills can benefit a college team.

  5. Volunteer and get involved: Participating in community service and extracurricular activities shows that you are a well-rounded individual. Find opportunities to volunteer in your community and get involved in clubs and organizations at your school.

  6. Be yourself: Finally, be true to yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not in order to impress coaches or admissions officers. Show them who you really are and why you would be a great addition to their school and athletic program.

Standing out on college applications as a student-athlete requires a combination of dedication, hard work, and strategic planning. By starting early, focusing on academics, being proactive, showing leadership, volunteering and getting involved, and being true to yourself, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by the colleges of your choice.
