In Tijeras, New Mexico, Rhiannon Wild’s volleyball journey began in the eighth grade. What started as a middle school sport quickly became a defining passion—one that would shape her high school experience, develop her leadership skills, and influence her future goals. Now, as a graduating senior from East Mountain High School and a proud member of Student Athlete Scholars, Rhiannon reflects on a journey built not just on athletic growth, but on perseverance, teamwork, and character.
Rhiannon has balanced her role as a competitive volleyball player with academic commitment and personal development, embodying what it means to be a true student-athlete. Her acceptance into Student Athlete Scholars—an invitation-only community recognizing high-achieving student-athletes who excel in competition, the classroom, and in character—further highlights her accomplishments. This recognition reflects her dedication not only to the sport she loves but also to her academic and personal growth.
A Passion Sparked in Eighth Grade
Rhiannon’s introduction to volleyball came in eighth grade, and it didn’t take long for her passion to take hold. Like many young athletes, she began with a desire to learn and compete. But what set her apart was her determination to improve. She embraced the fundamentals, worked on her technique, and committed herself to becoming better each season.
When she transitioned into high school at East Mountain High School, she joined the C-team. Rather than seeing it as a starting point, she saw it as an opportunity. She pushed herself in practices, absorbed feedback from coaches, and continued refining her skills as both an outside hitter (OH) and a left back defensive specialist (DS). Her versatility on the court became one of her strengths, allowing her to contribute both offensively and defensively.
Her persistence paid off. Rhiannon earned a spot on the varsity team—a place she would hold for the next three years. For many athletes, making varsity is a milestone. For Rhiannon, it was proof that dedication and steady improvement truly make a difference.
Excellence Through Leadership
By her senior year, Rhiannon’s impact on her team extended far beyond her performance on the court. She was named team captain, a role that reflected the trust her coaches and teammates placed in her leadership.
As captain, she set the tone for the team. She brought energy to practices, encouraged accountability among her teammates, and provided steady motivation during both wins and losses. Leadership in volleyball requires more than vocal direction—it demands resilience, composure, and the ability to unify a group toward a shared goal. Rhiannon embraced that responsibility fully.
She supported her teammates through challenges, whether that meant lifting spirits after a tough match or pushing for focus during high-pressure moments. Her leadership was rooted in connection and care, qualities that strengthened team chemistry and reinforced the importance of unity.
Playing for More Than Stats
When asked about her high school highlights, Rhiannon doesn’t immediately point to statistics or individual achievements. Instead, she reflects on the relationships she built along the way.
“There are so many highlights to look back on,” she shares, “but my favorite moments weren’t about the stats or even the position—it was about the people.”
For Rhiannon, volleyball has always been about more than the scoreboard. Some of the best teammates and friends she’s met have come through the sport, and those connections have lasted long after the final whistle. Practices, bus rides, pre-game rituals, and shared celebrations created bonds that defined her high school years.
Every achievement she celebrated was shared—with teammates who worked beside her, coaches who guided her development, and fans who cheered her on. That shared experience is what makes sports meaningful to her. It’s about growth together, supporting one another, and building memories that extend beyond competition.
Commitment Beyond the Court
Rhiannon’s dedication to volleyball has run parallel with her academic efforts. As a member of Student Athlete Scholars, she is recognized not only for her athletic participation but also for her commitment to academic excellence and strong character.
Student Athlete Scholars exists to recognize and support high-achieving student-athletes who demonstrate balance across competition, academics, leadership, and service. The community provides access to scholarship opportunities, mentorship from experienced professionals, and college admissions insight designed to help driven athletes turn discipline and work ethic into meaningful next steps.
For Rhiannon, this recognition affirms the hard work she has invested in all aspects of her life. Being part of Student Athlete Scholars reflects her ability to manage the demands of athletics while maintaining academic focus. It also reinforces the importance of integrity, resilience, and growth—qualities she has demonstrated throughout her high school career.
More than just an honor, Student Athlete Scholars represents a network of support as she transitions into the next phase of her education. The community emphasizes confidence, clarity, and opportunity, helping student-athletes open doors as both competitors and scholars.
Looking Ahead: A Future in Occupational Therapy
As she prepares to graduate, Rhiannon is setting her sights on the next chapter. She plans to attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, where she will major in Occupational Therapy. Her goal is to help people reach their desired health outcomes and improve their quality of life.
The choice reflects her compassion and desire to make a meaningful difference. Occupational therapy focuses on empowering individuals to regain or strengthen the skills needed for daily living. It’s a field rooted in patience, empathy, and problem-solving—traits that align naturally with Rhiannon’s character.
Her experience as an athlete has likely contributed to this direction. Years of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance have shaped her understanding of physical health, resilience, and the importance of support systems. These experiences will serve her well as she pursues a career centered on helping others.
Volleyball: A Lifelong Connection
At one point, Rhiannon dreamed of playing volleyball in college. While life ultimately guided her toward a different path, her love for the game remains unchanged.
She plans to continue playing volleyball at Grand Canyon University, whether through club teams or intramural programs. For her, staying connected to the sport is about more than competition—it’s about joy, community, and continued growth.
Volleyball has been a constant presence in her life since eighth grade. It has taught her resilience after losses, humility in victory, and the power of collective effort. It has given her friendships that she treasures and lessons that extend far beyond the court.
Even as she shifts her primary focus to academics and her future career, volleyball will remain part of her identity. The game that sparked her passion years ago will continue to provide connection, challenge, and fulfillment.
A Legacy of Growth and Gratitude
As Rhiannon Wild graduates from East Mountain High School, she does so as more than a varsity athlete. She leaves as a three-year varsity player, a senior team captain, a member of NM Cactus Volleyball, a Student Athlete Scholar, and a young woman prepared for the responsibilities of college and beyond.
Her journey reflects steady growth—from an eighth grader discovering a new sport to a senior leading her team with confidence. It reflects resilience in pursuing improvement, gratitude for teammates and mentors, and clarity about her future goals.
Most importantly, it reflects heart.
For Rhiannon, the journey has always been the best part. The practices, the shared celebrations, the friendships, and the lessons learned have shaped her into the person she is today. As she steps into her next chapter at Grand Canyon University, she carries with her the discipline of an athlete, the focus of a scholar, and the compassion of a future healthcare professional.
Rhiannon Wild’s story is one of dedication, leadership, and balance—a true example of what it means to be both an athlete and a scholar.
